I say yes, it can.

Recently on Copyblogger, Sonia wrote about some very intriguing words from Matt Cutts, head of Google’s anti-spam team. In The Straight Dope on Facebook, Twitter, and SEO, she quotes Cutts revealing that Google is beginning to factor social media links into search results:

We do use Twitter and Facebook links in ranking, as we always have in our web search rankings, but in addition we’re also trying to figure out a little bit about the reputation of an author or a creator on twitter or Facebook. […]

Here’s my comment from the Copyblogger post:

The real SEO value is in second-hand backlinks. Sure, links on social media sites themselves are nofollowed, but if someone links to you in a blog post, that will be followed.

Don’t just focus on social media sharing, but “blogability.” Are there qualities that make something more likely to be linked to in a blog post? I think so: you write for an audience which has a lot of bloggers in it, you create a great resource which prompts them to tell their readers (especially for link roundup type of posts) or you’re taking a stand on a divisive issue are just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

I would certainly be glad if the Big G took social media sharing of links into account as a measure of popularity and relevance, at least temporarily while a topic is fresh.

Be Bloggable

What I’m saying is: be bloggable. Getting other bloggers to link to you has always been a goal, but now with most of the link-sharing taking place on social media, we have the chance to get our links in front of many more bloggers faster than in the past. The trick is to get other bloggers to want to link back to your content from their blogs, not just via social media.

The quick guide to better blogability

It’s one thing to just say “be bloggable”, but it’s quite another to accomplish it. If blogability came in a bottle you’d already have it and I’d be having this typed by my clone, which I could afford to have created, because I’d be stinking rich (screw that virtual assistant stuff, cloning yourself is where it’s gonna be at ).

So here’s a quick rundown on being more bloggable:

Start a link list post series – This is a long-term strategy that won’t get you big results right away, but will pave the way for steady results later. This is based on the idea of good karma or the Zig Ziglar “effect”: if you help others get what they want, you’ll get what you want, too (totally paraphrasing there). Other bloggers want backlinks just as much as you do (well, the smart ones do). If you provide them, chances are they’ll reciprocate eventually. The key to success with this strategy is to forget about who you linked to and forget about whether or not they’ll reciprocate. In other words, keep the notion of reciprocity out of your conscious mind. Just give and don’t worry about it. Trust that links will come.

Learn and practice the fine art of linkbaiting – Linkbait is what we call a headline that demands to be clicked because it is so curious and/or outrageous. One of the most successful linkbaiters I know is Lyndon Antcliff of Cornwall SEO. Check out the posts in his Linkbait category. Soak that shit up like a sponge. I recommend you subscribe to his blog, also.

Ask to be linked – This is where good networking (and a little homework) comes in. The first tip I gave you was to start a link post series. Now what I’m telling you is to actively seek out link post series from other bloggers. Follow these posts for a while to get a feel for the content. Then politely email the blogger and say: I’ve been reading your link posts and really enjoy them because {insert genuine reason here}. I have a link you may find useful for your readers. Then provide copy-and-paste HTML code if you can. Why? So your keyword-rich anchor text is included. By making this as convenient as possible for the blogger, you’re also raising your chances of having your desired anchor text used for the backlink. If you use your imagination, there are other ways to ask for links.

Utilize your blog pack – If you are part of a blog pack, then you can all mutually agree to create backlinks for each other in all kinds of ways. You are limited only by your imagination.

Good content? Well, DUH

You’ll notice I didn’t say anything about writing good content. Do I have to? C’mon.

Captain Obvious strikes again

Naturally, you’ll want to grow your social media presence to have as many active, engaged followers as you can get. The bigger your garden, the bigger your harvest, right?

Wheels turning?

I hope your mental gearwheels are turning. Got any suggestions to add to the list? Please share in the comments. Questions? Comments. Meaning of life? Hey, it never hurts to ask in the comments.

If you can’t see the Headway SEO videos in your email or reader, visit Remarkablogger.

Headway has the most complete set of search engine optimization features compared to any other premium theme around, without any additional plugins needed.

In fact, even if you did nothing but switch to Headway, your search optimization would be improved from the default settings alone. I wouldn’t recommend you stop there, though. A little knowledge goes a long way. Having the best tools for improved WordPress SEO baked right into your theme is great, but it’s even better if you know what to do with them to really maximize your optimization so you rank higher.

Watch the video above for a run-down of the main SEO configuration page in Headway, in which you set your blog’s home page and global SEO options. But here’s a point-by-point list of Headway’s formidable SEO features and why they matter:

Automatic URL Canonicalization – This eliminates the problem that Google sees <kbd>http://www.domain.com</kbd> and <kbd>http://domain.com</kbd> as two different web pages with the same exact content. Combined with the other SEO features of Headway, you can ensure Google and Bing know which URL really “belongs” to a page in your blog. That way, you concentrate your search strength to the right pages, instead of diluting it across multiple duplicate content pages.

Separate Titles from Blog Post/Page Headlines – There’s an HTML tag in every web page called title, and what’s in it carries a lot of importance in search—it’s used as the big headline text you click on in search results. Google and Bing look at the words in the title to help decide how to rank a page. Normally in WordPress, the title is automatically generated from your blog post headline, but sometimes we want it to be a little different. WordPress alone won’t let you change that, but Headway does.

Meta descriptions – The meta description tag is another HTML tag that search engines use to judge a page. It’s also used in search results as the description (go figure) below the title link of each search result (Note: not always, but often). This makes it kind of a big deal for SEO, but guess what? WordPress does not even have this built in!

Unless you use a plugin or a theme like Headway, no descriptions for you. Previously, you had to hack your WordPress theme code. Headway makes this painless, you just write your description in a box. Often the description is what really convinces people they should click on your link in the search results, instead of some other guy’s.

Total Nofollow Control – Adding “nofollow” to a link in HTML tells search engines to ignore the link and act like it doesn’t exist. This causes search engines to “see” a different picture of a web page than if all the links were “visible” to it.

This matters for two reasons: One, because the words and destinations of links affect search rankings. And, two, because if you have any sort of paid or compensated links in your post, and they are not “nofollowed,” you are violating Google’s terms of service. Headway gives you complete control over nofollow in your blog. From links in a post to comment author links, to links to entire pages, Headway lets you decide what to let search engines see.

Not Just Nofollow, but Noindex, Too – In addition to affecting the way search engines see and don’t see links, you can tell them to ignore entire pages. When you search the web, you’re not searching the actual web, you’re searching the search engines’ indexes of the web. Noindex tells them to not add a page to their index.

There may be pages that are necessary to have on your site, but which don’t contain content that benefits your search rankings. For example, you may be writing a whole big new section of your site, and you don’t want search engines to find it, yet.

Not only can you noindex individual pages on the fly, you can noindex entire classes of pages in order to avoid having five different URLs for a blog post as far as search engines see things. You can noindex all tag, category, and other archives, for example. The idea is that only URL search engines have for your post is the permalink one.

Seamless Integration with All-In-One SEO Pack – Many bloggers concerned with SEO are already using a popular plugin called the All-In-One SEO Pack (AIOSEO for short). If you switch to Headway, all of your AISEO data is used by Headway, which means you don’t have to go back and redo the SEO on your previous posts.

In fact, you can happily deactivate AIOSEO and have one less plugin to slow your blog down. Other blog themes with their own built-in SEO features allow AISEO to override their own features, but you have to keep the plugin and keep it updated. With Headway, you can throw it overboard and have one less thing to worry about.

Breadcrumbs – Headway creates breadcrumb links at the top of the page that show a visitor’s location in the blog. Headway breadcrumbs use your blog’s categories, turning your categories into keyword link powerhouses on every single page of your blog. This works especially well if you’ve set your permalinks to being category-based, but more keyword-rich link text always helps, even if you’re using the normal date-based permalinks.

What about code frameworks and all that? To my thinking, any premium theme from now on is going to be built on a code framework that is better than your average theme’s code, or people aren’t even going to buy it. In other words, code frameworks are no longer a point of difference. Code frameworks are just par for the course, anymore. And without the features I’ve listed in this post, code frameworks really aren’t any help with SEO. Beyond valid XHTML/CSS and well-written PHP and JavaScript for speed and accurate parsing/rendering, code frameworks by themselves do nothing for SEO.

Note that none of these features will improve your writing, but they will help good writing be found more easily. You don’t want your good writing to be hampered by a bad WordPress theme, do you? That’s like putting a fifty pound weight in a backpack and then trying to run a marathon. Your theme should help you, not hinder you. Take the weight off. Make headway.

What you see in the video above is actually Headway 1.5 which will be released in a matter of weeks. Most of these features exist in the current version of Headway, and upgrades are free for life for all current Headway owners. The sooner you switch, the sooner you can start improving your blog’s search optimization.

In the battle between content and SEO, which will win? The answer may surprise you! Watch this short, easy video to see how to get around the question entirely.

If you can’t see the Content vs SEO video below, watch it directly on Remarkablogger or YouTube.

Content Is King Of…

…NOTHING, if it cannot be found. If you think that all you have to do is simply “write good content” and you will rank high in search, you are being naïve. Sorry to be so bald (ha ha) about it, but I’m not really doing you a service by pretending otherwise just so you’ll not suffer any angst over your lack of writing and optimization skills.

You Don’t Have To Like It, But…

…I didn’t make the rules. I’m just the guy trying to help you understand them so that you know when to follow them, bend them, or even break them. There are rules to this—it’s not just a matter of my opinion.

You’ve been lied to in a big way. This whole “content vs. SEO” battle is not the real fight, as you’ll see in the video.

Google is the rule maker. Ignore them at your peril. Watch the video to discover what the true relationship is between content and blog seo.

You know who says SEO works? People who have high rankings and benefit from them.

You know who says SEO is bullshit? Mostly (but not always, so note that qualifier before you flame me in the comments) people who have pitiful traffic and who make no money, and who are looking for a scapegoat. For the record, I don’t count Johnny B. among that group.

In other words, if someone isn’t doing well, don’t listen to them. Seriously. I mean, if they’re not already successful, what the hell do they know? At the very least, their credibility is suspect.

And Credibility Counts When Giving Advice

Here’s my credibility:

<a title-"Number one ranked blog consultant" href="http://remarkablogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/numberonebaby.GIF">

Now, let me pose a question: have I sacrificed the quality of my content on Remarkablogger in the name of SEO?

Not in the least, of course.

But… if I wasn’t relentlessly gunning after a top ranking by employing SEO, do you believe I would rank number one?

I doubt very much that I would. But I do, and that’s because there’s a way around this whole “content vs. SEO” question in the first place.

Do Not Let Yourself Be Held Prisoner

You’re running a business, trying to make it in a cutthroat marketplace. I know how that is, because that’s what I’m doing, too. Part of the reason why I’m succeeding is because I understand how “content vs. SEO” is a false dichotomy. And I want to help you succeed, so I don’t want your thinking to be held prisoner by this false dichotomy.

Thesis includes its own SEO options, eliminating the need for multiple SEO plugins. I wrote this as the Ultimate Guide to Thesis SEO.

Once you’ve installed Thesis, you can modify various SEO settings in the Thesis Options under Appearance in your WordPress admin.

Title Tag

You can decide whether to show the site name or the site tagline in the title tags for your blog’s home page, or both, and in what order. These settings are only for the home page and not for single post pages or other blog pages.

This matters, because Google places a lot of importance on what the
<title>
tag has in it. To search engines, a document’s title is the primary indicator of its contents. In Thesis, what you call your blog and use for the blog tagline may become your blog’s title tag content. Title tags are often (but not always) used by Google as the main link text in a search result.

I would only show the tagline if it’s short and has more important keywords than the site name. For instance, if a site name is a brand name instead of a keyword, but if keywords are in the tagline, then consider showing the tagline in addition to the site name.

Google is sensitive to what appears natural (and seems to be growing more sensitive to this by the week). The most natural “non-SEO” way to do titles is to have the site name first (and often as the only thing).

Keyword-heavy titles are a no-no, precisely because to Google it looks like you’re trying to artificially boost your search rankings. Notice I didn’t say no keywords. Keep it light and keep it real. Get maximum keyword authority by availing yourself of link services from a trusted SEO service provider.

Append site name to page titles

Checking this box in your Thesis options sticks the name of your blog after the titles of pages and that include single post pages. It’s common now to exclude the site name on other pages, and for blogs especially to exclude site name from single post pages. I don’t think this is a smart idea, for two reasons:

It’s more natural and non-SEO-ish to include the site name, and faking naturalness is the paradoxical name of the game where Google is concerned.

If it’s good for people, it’s usually good for SEO.

For me the bottom line with appending site name to page titles or not has to do with brand-building and being user-friendly. Page names without any site names would make your browser history, back button, and tabs more difficult to use, not easier.

Thesis also lets you choose the text separator character placed between blog name and tagline. By default it is a hyphen. Any common character is fine, such as colons or pipes, which look like this: | (a simple vertical line, it is shift+backslash on your keyboard).

Home Page Meta

Meta tags for SEO are the meta description and meta keywords. Except it’s really only just the description. Google and most other search engines pay little to no attention at all to the meta keywords because of past abuses by site owners. However, the meta description becomes the descriptive text below a result link in search engine results pages (called SERPs), so what you write in it is very important. You have to keep it short: about 150 characters or less (use twitter’s “countdown” feature in the tweet box if you don’t want to count characters yourself).

Whatever you create for your blog’s name, tagline, and home page meta description are going to have a big impact on what your blog’s home page gets found for in search, and whether or not people will actually click on its entry in the results pages when it appears.

Add Noindex to Archive Pages

Google sends its trusty Googlebot search engine spider to crawl the web and add pages to the Google search index. You have control over what Googlebot sees by controlling which pages are added to Google’s search index. These search spiders are also called robots.

Why would you not want Google to add all of your blog archive types to its index? Because if there is more than one URL for the exact same blog post, then Google will see those URLs as separate, individual web pages that have the exact same content in them. This creates what SEOs refer to as “duplicate content.” The real problem with this is that you are now competing against yourself and these URLs are weaker than one big strong URL would be. In other words, Google likes an obvious main choice.

So you really only want one type of archive pages to be indexed by Google. Which one you pick could depend on how you have your blog’s permalinks set up.

If you’re using category-based permalinks like this:
http://domain.com/category/postname/
, then you want to uncheck category noindex. If you’re using typical date-based pretty permalinks like this:
http://domain.com/year/month/day/postname/
, then uncheck the daily archives noindex.

It’s also worth noting that checking boxes does more than noindex these archive pages: it also nofollows them. Not only will the pages not be in Google’s search index, their links will not be followed (seen, really) by Googlebot to their destination (think of it as “blocking the exits” but only for search engine spiders).

Canonical URLs

You want this. This is a brilliant feature in Thesis. Canonical URLs tell search engines which URL for a post is the one you want it to see. This is done through a link tag in the head of the HTML:
<link rel="canonical">
. So a link to:
http://remarkablogger.com/2009/06/11/frugal-theme-review/#comment-98707
would actually be seen by a search engine as
http://remarkablogger.com/2009/06/11/frugal-theme-review/
.

Optimizing at the Page/Post Level in Thesis

When you write a post or a page and you’re using Thesis, you have many great SEO options at your command.

Custom Title Tag

You can supply a custom title that is different from the post’s main headline. You should use this… but not like you’re probably thinking. Here’s the thing: there is nearly no difference between a headline that’s great for SEO and a headline that’s highly attractive to people. Having gobbledegook title tags that are “SEO optimized” is an outdated strategy.

When you submit a post to any social media service, the title tag is used to create the headline for the item on the social media service. So if your title is different from your blog’s headline, this could create a problem. The title tag has to be a great headline, so it should be the headline. And of course, titles (not headlines) are what Google uses as the headline link in search results pages. So, even in search, the headline does all the work of pulling people in.

In other words, what I’m really saying here is take the time to create killer headlines for your blog posts that are so good, you won’t have to use the custom title tag feature in Thesis.

Meta Description

Same deal as meta description for the blog’s home page mentioned above, except this time it’s for this individual page or post. The character limit (about 120-160) is short. What you write here matters. Google bolds keyword matches in this text in search results pages (also for titles). Do not needlessly repeat keywords in the meta description–once is enough, really.

Meta Keywords

Fairly useless, but if you feel you must, put about 3 to 10 keywords here.

Noindex this Page

Checking this box essentially tells Google and other search engines: “Hey, don’t bother adding me to your search index, I don’t want to be found.” In other words, the entire page or post will not exist for Google (and for the world, essentially).

Post Image Alt Text

You can supply a post image in the Thesis single post options that is treated differently than placing the image directing in the post content, which is one of the coolest features of Thesis. This alt text is designed to be used by assistive technologies which allow the disabled to browse the web. Making this text target important keywords for your blog can help your SEO (so does accurate image file naming).

Excerpt

You should write unique, original material in here that is not the same text as your meta description.

About Thesis in Combination with All-in-One SEO Pack Plugin

If you are using the ever-popular All-in-One SEO Pack plugin (hereafter referred to as AIOSEO), you have some extra work to do. Thesis will allow AIOSEO to prevail, so you should be safe. If you want to preserve all the old AIOSEO settings while now beginning to use Thesis SEO settings for new posts, you can certainly do that. You will need to check the box in your post editing screen that will disable AIOSEO for that post only.

You will also need to deactivate many of the automatic settings of AIOSEO, such as auto meta descriptions (you should be doing all of these manually, anyway, for the best possible optimization). You will also have to make sure AIOSEO is updated, even if you’re only keeping it around to maintain the optimization of your pre-Thesis posts (should you decide to take advantage of Thesis’s SEO options).

Some optimization is better than no optimization, which is why “out of the box” blogs are still better than most regular websites, and the automatic settings of AIOSEO are better than not having AIOSEO. However, manual creation of the meta tags and careful choosing of all settings will deliver the best optimization possible with these tools. One reason why I like Thesis is that it does not automatically provide content for these settings. No magic bullet SEO automation will work as well as insightful manual optimization.

And This is Only One Reason to Get Thesis

Thesis is much more than better search optimization for your blog. It’s a highly-customizable theme for WordPress self-hosted blogs (in other words, it’s not available for wordpress.com users). You can customize a huge array of elements in Thesis without doing any HTML/CSS/PHP coding. If you’re a designer/developer or a multiple blog owner, get the developer’s license. The developer’s license lets you use Thesis on all of your blogs.

If you already have Thesis, but want more information on optimizing your WordPress blog overall (including keyword research, permalinks strategies, and more) then you’ll want to check out WordPress SEO Secrets, my step-by-step guide.

And even though the Basic option is a strong value, the price was still out of reach for many of you.

I have received many emails and direct messages on Twitter asking if I could possibly sell just the book, without the video walkthroughs, without the audio files from the sold-out teleseminar I did last year, without the first issue of the newsletter, and without the first complimentary teleseminar happening at the end of March.

There is absolutlely no reason I can think of why I shouldn’t do this. Of course you can have the book only! Look, I want as many people as possible to have this information, and I want to make it available at a fair price that’s good for both you and me. That’s just good business.

I am not going to run through a sales pitch for this. You probably already know whether or not you want it. But if you’re kind of new here or need a refresher, here is the big fat sales page for WordPress SEO Secrets.

Don’t go buy anything from that page unless you’re sure you want all the extras. If you want the book only, make sure you come back here!

Cool? OK, here’s how to get yours:

The price for the book-only version is just $47. Click the buy button below to get yours.

PayPal is my payment processor. Even if you don’t have a PayPal account, that’s OK, you can use a regular credit card. You’ll go through the PayPal payment process.

After payment, you’ll be directed to the product download page. Download your copy of WordPress SEO Secrets from there.

Start reading and enjoy! Learn lots! Let your new-found SEO knowledge pay off in greater traffic to your blog.

Sometimes you get both at the same time. That’s how it is with WordPress SEO Secrets.

The part I got right?

Bloggers want this, they need it. It fills a big knowledge gap most bloggers have and gives them the practical know-how they need to raise their blog’s search traffic, search rankings, and PageRank. This is a practical business investment because not only does WordPress SEO Secrets pay for itself, it puts money in your pocket. The feedback has been outstanding so far.

The not-so-right part?

The deadline. In some cases, a deadline is wonderful motivator. Deadlines help people act on a decision they already want to make, it’s as simple as that. For all their artificiality, they just plain work.

When WordPress SEO Secrets went on sale, it was half price. Then, after a deadline, it went to its normal price. I had one more deadline: tonight, I was going to take it off the market entirely. But based on the emails and the tweets I’ve received, I have realized that allowing it to remain available is the way to go for now. But rather than push it back to another arbitrary date, I’m eliminating the deadline.

Thanks for making your voices heard on this one. As you can see, I’m listening and responding. Selling more of it is not exactly going to bum me out.

The WordPress SEO Secrets Newsletter

I’m putting together the first edition of the WordPress SEO Secrets Newsletter, a monthly electronic publication in PDF format available only to owners of WordPress SEO Secrets. If you have the Basic Option for WordPress SEO Secrets, the first issue of the newsletter is free, and if you want to continue to receive it, you can order a subscription.

If you have the Lifetime Option for WordPress SEO Secrets, you will automatically receive the newsletter at no additional charge. The cost of the newsletter (along with three additional free SEO teleseminars) is included in your Lifetime Option.

WordPress SEO Secrets Teleseminars

The first of the WordPress SEO Secrets Teleseminars will take place some time in March. I want to give those who have WordPress SEO Secrets enough time to go through the material, implement changes, and get results. That’s the point where many of you will have questions and will benefit greatly from a “booster shot.”

The first teleseminar is free to owners of WordPress SEO Secrets (something to think about: the entire WordPress SEO Secrets Basic Option package is the price of the first SEO teleseminar I did last year). Owners of the Lifetime Option get (at least) three more free WordPress SEO Secrets Teleseminars included in their Lifetime Option package. Basic Option owners will be able to pay a registration fee for the teleseminars after the first one.

Let me stress once again that only owners of WordPress SEO Secrets will be invited to these teleseminars. I’ll be doing these four times a year, so you can jump into the cycle at any time with your purchase of WordPress SEO Secrets.

I’ve seen a few tweets on Twitter from folks who say they’re reading, watching, or listening to it and learning a lot.

The other day I provided an excerpt from the ebook portion of the course, which was very well-received as great stand-alone content in its own right, but which also convinced many that WordPress SEO Secrets was worth their investment. Providing lengthy samples of the best parts of the product is a great way to really show you have got the goods.

So I decided to do it again. This time, I’m providing an audio sample. Except it’s not really a sample. It’s one whole dang audio file from out of 5 audio files included with WordPress SEO Secrets. These audio files are edited from a sell-out WordPress SEO teleseminar I did a few months ago. They are not the exact same content as what’s in the book, though there is overlap.

You could learn a lot from this even if you don’t have all of WordPress SEO Secrets, of course, but just imagine what else you’d be missing. Here’s the audio:

To avoid any confusion, I should tell you I just recently changed the name of the program, so the audio still says “SEONomicon” which is the previous name. You can learn more about WordPress SEO Secrets and download your own copy here: WordPress SEO Secrets.

Because this teleconference was so exclusive and small, I didn’t mute the lines for the attendees, so you will hear their voices and background sounds from time to time, but it was a small price to pay for the intimate feeling and having it feel more like a group gathering instead of a lecture.

Oh, by the way, the price of WordPress SEO Secrets is going to DOUBLE at midnight tonight, so don’t wait. The last time I had a deadline on a product a few people missed it and asked me to extend it. I didn’t. The Fast-movers get the breaks, and those who hesitate pay the higher price.

I hope you enjoy and get a lot out of the audio! Get your copy of WordPress SEO Secrets before the price goes up.
