This reminds me somewhat of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs based on his 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation”. All of them fit the upper tiers of the hierarchy like “love/belonging”, “esteem”, and even “self-actualization”.

Yup, I can see that. Priority one: shelter. Priority two: Facebook! :)

Deep stuff – it’s good to get to the bottom of the ‘why’ – why do we do the stuff we do? As your post suggests, when you really start to think about it, we’re a whole lot more complicated that we think.

I guess some people share stuff for superficial, selfish reasons but, at the end of the day, I think it shows when someone shares out of a genuine desire to be helpful – real human communication beats automated social media junk any day.

I like the one about ‘self fulfilment’ – I think it overlaps, to some extent, with all the others – if we feel we’re giving of ourselves, sharing valuable content etc., then surely that’s self-fulfilling.

I’ll share this post because I think it’s healthy for us to think about what’s motivating us to click on all those links (if you’d asked the other question – why DON’T we share – my answer would be that, after reading and commenting, I sometimes simply forget!)

Why DON’T we share is also an interesting question. I know for myself, a couple other factors come into it: how much have I already shared (would this be too much)? Is it really valuable to others or is it only something that I liked?
