Pinterest is exploding right now. Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board or pin board. You create boards, give them names, and then create “pins” which are mostly pictures you find on the web of stuff you like.
Then, you share your boards and pins with friends and everybody has a good time.
It has a reputation as being a site for women, but more guys are starting to use it.
The marketing potential for Pinterest is huge.
Check out the short video I made if you want to see a little of what Pinterest is about.

Love this post Michael! You are very informative and somehow you always make me laugh

Pintrest made me shiver with delight the first time I laid eyes on the site. Previously thinking I was immune to such time-sucks, I quickly found myself surfing it with the same vigor an ex-bf who won’t be named used to surf porn each evening. Time stops and all that matters is the next picture. So I quickly named Pintrest “girl porn.”
I now stop before I ever go on the site and ask myself “Do I have time for this?” Most of the time the answer’s ‘no’ so my time on the site has been greatly diminished…but not my love! My pinning love is undying.
It’s nice to know that more men are discovering the joys of pinning. I think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised to see how much our pintrests overlap.

There’s definitely a lot of cool stuff happening there that guys are doing, from classic pinup girl images to killer suits to all manner of technological geekery.
And bacon. Lots of bacon.
Thank you for introducing me to Pinterest and the beautifully simple explanation about what it is. I would not have considered using it otherwise – though I see it as a way of starting to get known as an ‘expert’ in a field if used thoughtfully. Not that I would consider myself an expert! But what do you mean about bacon?
Ha ha, there’s just lots of pictures of food with bacon in it. People love bacon, I guess.

I always love watching a Michael Martine video.
As far as Pinterest in concerned, I fail to see how it could possibly be useful. Of course this means I will be sucked into its vacuum most any day now.
Thanks, Michael. I know where you live.

People said the same thing about Twitter. I think the key is not to come on there and be all like “HEY LOOK I’M MARKETING, WHEEE!”
Connecting with people is always good. Can you engage in meaningful marketing on Pinterest that people actually like? We’ll see. Only one way to find out, right?

I’m brand new to pinterest and haven’t yet gotten sucked into the vortex (who are we kidding it’s only a matter of time). However prior to me joining I started getting traffic from there although I can’t seem to find my site anywhere on there. I guess this means somebody pinned me? A compliment right?
Alexis recently posted..What You Need to Know About Sleeping Through the Night Part 3
A compliment, indeed! If you blog about the kinds of things people also like to pin, I can see Pinterest driving massive traffic to your site.
What I do here on Remarkablogger is not that kind of blog, so it will be very interesting to see what—if any—traffic comes my way via Pinterest.

Michael, as usual you have done your best to inform your readers of another new trend. As a blogger who has not used my posts for marketing purposes, I love the pictures and inspirational quotes and videos that come my way on FB. I have gotten many inspiring ideas for my posts from receiving them.I am anxious to check it out, and know from the other comments of your readers, that it may be a time sucker.Weighing the benefits and the pitfalls of losing more time is something I will have to consider. Thanks again. http://cindimp.wordpress.com/

As usual, your post was informative. You always seem to know how to inform your readers about the latest trends. As a blogger, I can see the benefits of Pinterest.I have not used my posts for marketing purposes, but I do see the benefits as I enjoy the many posts and videos I get on my FB page.I have gotten so many ideas from them to spark up ideas for my own posts. My concern is getting sucked into a vortex. Up to now I have been able to limit my time on the Internet, and see this as a possible deterrent to my life, but I’m willing to give it a go and see what happens.

Looks to me like you have the right approach and won’t let it take over your life.

I fucking hate you Martine.
You have deliberately screwed with my mind after me telling you I wanted to streamline my social media. In fact I suspect you started Pinterest just to wind me up!

G’Day Michael,
Happy New Year! Thanks for the Pinterest piece. Cogent, lucid and informative: congratulations.
Sounds great. I’m bound to be able to find lots of people to discuss the relative importance of Jelly Roll Morton visavis the arranging style of Don Redman And Benny Carter.
So invite Michael,; invite me.
Best Wishes

Hi Michael,
Great video! Simple but effective!
Pinterest is something that has been popping up in a bunch of different places lately. I agree with you that it seems to appeal to women more than men since that is who I have been noticing using it. I’m carious if this is going to explode soon or if it will be just a better looking Delicious or Pinboard (my fav). I might have to dig into it a bit more.

You mean “explode” like it’s a good thing, right? From where I’m standing, things are looking a bit explody.
Yeah, I meant “explode” in a good way. About the middle of last year I’d hear about once in a while but now it seems that I hear about it daily.

We just started using Pinterest at our Online marketing agency. I think the trick with this site is to not promote yourself all the time. We “pin” links back to our site, but also have a board dedicated to the area we live in, as well as one dedicated to technology we love. Thanks for the informative post. You can stop by and visit our boards here:

Some good ideas, there. Thanks for commenting!
I still remember when Xanga had just come out. Then myspace, facebook, twitter. It took a lot for me to get into myspace and facebook but I see a lot more social value in Pinterest versus the others. Instead of random posts about what people ate for breakfast or the weather, you get a truly visual look into who your friends are. I hope it continues to gain interest.

Bob William recently posted..Should You Start A Cleaning Business?
Agreed, Bob. Each posted image or video becomes a “social object” around which we can have a conversation or just share with others.
The term social object was coined by Hugh McLeod of http://gapingvoid.com. Google it if you’re interested in learning more, it’s really interesting stuff.

Funny how that happens!

I love Pinterest, it’s one of my favourite places online. I do agree that it’s very ‘girly’ so I’m glad to see more guys taking it up.
I mostly use it to collect cool things but I also occasionally share my own art on there and get a respectable number of views to my site from it.
Kirsty Hall recently posted..Jar No 353
Kirsty that’s great to hear that you’re getting traffic. Pinterest is a crafter/artist’s dream come true in that regard.
I would say there’s nothing inherently “girly” about the design of the site itself, but rather from the bulk of the content you see on the home page: definitely stuff that one might assume is posted by women.

[...] WTF Pinterest: My wife Michelle turned me on to this site a couple of weeks ago. She uses it to find cool ideas for taking baby pictures. Basically Pinterest is a Social Media Platform where you can build “Vision” or “Wish” boards using images and then share them socially. Michael Martine over at Remarkablogger does a great job of explaining exactly what Pinterest is all about. [...]
I just found Pinterest and love it. I don’t seem to feel compelled to hang out there for hours (maybe the first couple times just to get it populated – didn’t want to be one of those lame-os with empty boards or only 2 pins hehe) It’s refreshing to see something that is just a visual delight and finding something isn’t dependent on being in the right place at the right time…

I think “visual delight” sums it up nicely! Thanks for your comment.

Interesting stuff Mike – it’s definately got some pointential for a variety of possible uses. I think I may start using for a “mood board” for possible web design ideas.
[...] WTF is Pinterest? [...]
I had Pinterest on the back burner for while but last week decided to investigate. I didn’t think it would have business application for me (I can definitely see biz application for others) but I was wrong. Seven days later I now have a quasi-robust Pinterest page devoted to my business and some of my personal likes. Assuming there’s an image to share, I’ll use it as much as Twitter.
