In this WordPress tutorial video (about 8 minutes), I show you some really easy tips for customizing the WordPress Admin area and the post writing page:
- How to show or hide content boxes
- How to rearrange content boxes
- How to customize some of the settings
It’s amazing how a few simple, easy steps can improve your efficiency and workflow in the WordPress environment. None of this involves any special knowledge or plugins.
Are you interested in learning about plugins for better WordPress administration and management? Let me know in the comments. I’d be happy to try out a few to see if they’re really worth using and share those with you.

Yeah thanks Michael – now I have to spend my Saturday morning revamping my WordPress…
sheesh…
Love it!
I’m also going to finally install that Editorial Calendar plugin that i have been meaning to get set up.
Great tips as always.

A few moments of proactive work will save you gobs of time down the road. Let me know if you find that Editorial Calendar plugin useful. It only works well for me if I plan everything out first in Google Calendar.
Michael, this was really helpful; thanks. One thing I haven’t been able to figure out is how to make WP post headlines break where I want them to when I want them to be longer than usual. They break arbitrarily now, which often looks lousy.
The WP Codex doesn’t help, nor could I find anything in Headway. I reduced the kerning using Headway, but that’s all I’ve been able to do. This seems like it should be simple.

Hey Jean. The solution is simple… and yet not the greatest. In HTML, if you want to create a “soft line break,” you use the break tag, which looks like this:
. Note there is a space between the “r” and the “/.” You have to stick this where you want the line break to occur right in your post headline field.Simple, right? However, the downside is that some social media sharing tools will parse that break tag as content and it will show up in feeds or when the content is shared. One thing you can do to try and prevent that is to use the separate “title” field provided by your commercial theme (Headway, Thesis, etc.) or by a WordPress SEO plugin such as the excellent one by Joost de Valk. But even then, that’s no guarantee.
So if you really want precise line breaks in your blog post headlines on the page, the trade-off is that they may look wonky at times when appearing in other environments.
Hi Michael
I agree with you about recent comments and incoming links as two important areas to have up front. Also, I did not know how to get rid of wordpress security. I liked the part about making the text box bigger. I really am glad you showed how to do that. Do you use a plugin wysiwyg editor?
Thanks,
Jim

I’m just getting into wordpress so this video is great. I want to get the back end set up properly so I don’t have to mess with it (as much) down the road. I’m hoping to make wordpress as efficient as possible – i.e. more time writing and producing content and less time modifying the site to get my desired result.
I have little knowledge on wordpress and thought i would be introduced to some basics. I learnt much from the video though.
