Infographic: The Future of Blogging & Social Media Marketing

When I opened my virtual doors to blog consulting in 2007, only 16% of businesses were blogging. In 2009, when I quit my job to be a blog consultant full time, that number jumped to 29%. Jump to 2011 and we have 39% of businesses now using blogs for marketing.

For the full story and an awesome infographic full of data visualizations on the future of business marketing with blogs & social media, join me after the jump.

Infographic on blogging & social media marketing growth in business

Click on the picture to see it full size.

In this infographic you’ll find some pretty interesting numbers:

  • 61% now use social media to identify and attract new customers
  • 70% use social media to monitor their brand online
  • 26% are tweeting
  • 77% are engaging in email marketing
  • 93% is the success rate of using message boards and YouTube

Normally, creating this sort of thing isn’t my deal, so when I was approached by Dona Collins to create one just for me as a way to promote her skills and her company, of course I was like, “Hellz yeah!” If you need an infographic, she’s your woman.

Dona Collins is an infographic artist, part time blogger and a financial writer at CreditLoan.com. Visit CreditLoan to financial infographics and researched articles on topic of finance.

Based on these projections, what do you think there’s gonna be a saturation point with blogging & social media marketing? And what’s that gonna look like? How will we all be affected?

Hey nice tagline i like it..:p

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Thanks! It does everything a tagline should. One of the most important parts
      of any blog.

  • http://www.thenorthernedge.ca CMColeman

My personal projection is that blogging has greater staying power than other forms of social media.  The trends may change (videos and audio), but I only see more businesses (online and brick and mortar) adopting blogging as part of their marketing efforts as time goes on.  Twitter and Facebook – not sure.  To really stay leverage the power of connections in Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, I think you need to have a strong base of operations – like a blog or dynamic website.

I have to ask – 93% Success Rate using Message Boards and YouTube – what doe that mean?  Success in what terms – sales, clicks, leads?  That’s a big number, so it has my interest, I’m just not sure to what it is referring.

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Good point. The social media “satellites” around the planet of business
blogging may change, but business blogging will continue to evolve and grow.

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

I would investigate the cited sources for the information at the bottom of
      the infographic for that.

  • http://website-in-a-weekend.net/ Dave Doolin

Michael, I jumped in from Amplify of all places.

So, yes, I think there is a saturation point, or more likely, several saturation points.

On the one hand, the “easy money” for numbskulls is gone. The numbskulls saturated that market.

On the other hand, the market for bloggers with 5 years experience hasn’t even opened. This is partly why I focus on the “boring” fundamentals of the trade, because I treat it as a trade. There comes a time when passion takes a backseat to whatever else life throws in one’s face, and that’s when one needs the skills of the trade to kick in. Those skills take years to learn.

The coolest thing about blogging, though (IMO), is the cross-over with programming, with copywriting, with journalism, with marketing, etc.  Blogging is an interesting intersection of many things.

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Dave I love what you’re saying and I think you’re absolutely right. It laugh
in the face of anyone who claims (yet again) that blogging is dead. Business
blogging in particular is still just barely getting off the ground. It’s not
a passing fad because its DNA comes from the very thing about the web that
makes it unique and new from the previous business operating environment we
      had (meatspace only).

The stuff the guys were talking about in the Cluetrain Manifesto is proving
more true with every passing year.

And yet some things never change, like professional focus on mastering the
fundamentals while amateurs chase the next shiny object.

I’m glad this brought you out of the woodwork to comment! Your insights are
      always welcome here. :)

    G’Day Michael,
Thanks so much for this post. I’ll be forwarding it to a number of my offline clients who still see blogging and social media as some sort of nerdy indulgence.

    Regards

    Leon

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Ha! Well, the nerds are the ones creating and programming the tools, but
they’re used by hundreds of millions of people. We left the realm of the
nerdy about 2007 in my opinion.

    Blogging & Social Media Marketing.

The percentage of blogging and social media marketing will still increase by the following years since we can’t deny how great the functionality of these online tools in terms of communication. And maybe there could be more people who will do online jobs or start business. Thanks for sharing these facts.

Only 26% are tweeting? That’s strange. And 77% are doing email marketing! Woot, that’s interesting to know. Very nice infographic BTW.

  • http://www.ingresosalcuadrado.com Franck

Congrats Michael! I very much like the infographic.

IMO, the different information sources might be questionable, but that’s overall fine.

Enjoy the traffic that is being fueled to it by social networks.

I would be interested in reading how much of this traffic peak has been converted into something meaningfull for your business (eg, an email). My experience is that’s fun to be popular some hours, but the impact on the bottom line is often poor…

    Hopefully not for you!

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Yeah, you can look ‘em up yourself. They may be a bit fuzzy, but I don’t
think they’re too far off the mark. By including my email sign up form in
the post I’m building my list, so there will be a permanent boost to this.
      :)

  • http://markharai.com Mark Harai

The numbers are on the rise Michael… they continue to rise every year. SMB’s need to get busy developing their social web presence. Their competition certainly is.

    Thanks for the graphic!

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Exactly, and often (not always) first movers can establish and dominate.

      • http://markharai.com Mark Harai

“Not always” — good point, some are just getting killed and for no good reason at all.

Some are just hiring the wrong, guru, specialist, ninja, experts :P

        • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Why I said not always is that sometimes it’s the second company that comes
          in and cleans up. :)

So glad I’m on your list!  It’s a great infographic and especially cool that you are promoting Dona Collins in this way. Win/win. You are pretty easy to like.

  • http://twitter.com/lexirodrigo Alexis Rodrigo

Awesome infographic! Thanks for putting the stats together nicely like this.

We’re just seeing the beginning of a new way of marketing businesses through social media, and it’s very exciting! The forms may change, but the underlying principles — engagement, authenticity, community — will remain the same.

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Yes, in some ways, it’s actually very old-fashioned. Just the tools are
      whiz-bang internety stuff.

  • http://info.mainstreethost.com Main Street Host

I agree with CMColeman – blogging is going to be around for awhile.

    • http://remarkablogger.com Michael Martine

Yeah, we’re still just getting started in so many ways. You could say
      blogging is “growing up.”

Without the internet many businesses wouldn’t be around and like my business for example: Electricians London I benefit hugely from social media e.g: Facebook which many customers use to spread the word giving me a good name. I agree with a previous comment about blogging is only growing up. Many companies include blogs now on their websites which is perfect for sharing news, updates and allowing access to their customers to have their say. I’ve only just started with Twitter and I’m sure that will help me even more like other social media methods.
