If you can’t see the video below check it out on the blog.
I’m in Chicago at the moment for SOBCon, the best business blogging conference in the world. And I’m really busy working on stuff but I wanted to quickly talk about this topic. So I recorded directly to YouTube from my laptop camera.
I’m talking about the fear of failure and the fear of success in a way I haven’t heard anyone else talk about. I’m sure I’m not the only one who holds these ideas, but I don’t know anyone else off the top of my head.
It has to do with equilibrium. Watch the video and tell me what you think.

Michael,
I think it makes sense and I can relate to your WOW issue because I've been doing something similar, although to a lesser degree.
So I'd like to hear more about HOW to stop the self-sabatoge and HOW to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

We associate pain and experience resistance when contemplating some things
(not actually doing them, but thinking about them beforehand) and we
experience pleasure regarding others. Doing a bunch of work (even though
you'd get paid for it and you need money) can be seen as painful enough to
set aside for a short game break. The short game break turns into a long one
as you keep telling yourself you do that shit later. Then before you know it
you've lost the whole day.
You gotta link that action to something other than the short term “pain” of
doing the work. I linked it to a much more frightening pain: getting
utilities disconnected and freezing in the cold Vermont winter. Not having
the money to pay for internet access or my WoW account in the first place.
Not having the money to buy adequate food. Once I realized what the REAL
“pain” was my beliefs and my actions changed in an instant.
Suddenly I had my priorities correct as if a switch had been thrown, and now
I have no gaming addiction problem at all.
There's a safety & comfort being in that equalibrium. Only when the pain of being where we are becomes more significant than the pain we perceive in unknown territory do we actually push through that boundary.
It's like the default setting, we're hardwired that way.
Gaming the system aint easy, you need to self check constantly. It's all about how you manage yourself in the moments…that way longer term takes care of itself.
Enjoy SOBCon
Yes, even when it's bad for us, and there's the rub. I like the way you
phrase it.
