Headway 2 Puts Total Design Control in Your Hands Without Code

Yeah, I know, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. What have I been doing? I’ve been figuring some really important things out for myself, and I’ve also been busy helping the gang at Headway Themes bust out with Headway 2.0 (2.0.3 at this point). I’ll talk about both of these topics here because they’re related.

Headway again leapfrogs past every other theme framework out there in my opinion — even the ones now introducing drag & drop codeless designing, which Headway had from the beginning. Grant & Clay Griffiths are friends and we’ve worked on other projects in the past, but if Headway was a dud I would’ve politely declined any participation in it. Instead, Headway to me is the best thing since WordPress itself, and I like it so much I have become a compensated member of the team at Headway.

Headway LogoH2 is Hawt

You probably already know that the next version of Headway (which I have personally dubbed “H2″)  is available, but in case you didn’t or it receded from the front of your mind, here’s the quick lowdown on the new hawtness:

  • Automatic upgrades from previous versions of Headway directly from within WordPress, so upgrading is now a breeze
  • A Quick Start Wizard that walks you through only a few steps to design your WordPress site — if you have a banner image ready to go, you can have a beautiful site designed and ready to go in less than 5 minutes (all without writing a single line of code)
  • You can use any of the existing styles (combinations of various colors & fonts globally applied to your site) and create your own styles by simply saving and naming the current combination of fonts & colors
  • The arrangement of content at the page design level has been made even easier thanks to a new multi-column system to hold leafs (content boxes with many customization possibilities)
  • Easily back up, import & export custom Headway data and design information for peace of mind or faster design re-use
  • Multi-site compatible (what used to be called WordPress MU, now baked into regular-flavored WordPress)
  • Create rounded corners in your design just by dragging a slider control (or entering in a number) — a very cool and handy feature
  • 100% GPL-compliant (Mullenweg likes us now ;) )
  • Fully compatible with Scribe SEO, Gravity Forms, Backup Buddy, WishList Member and other premium plugins/services
  • Customization features which allow you to create any kind of site you want with WordPress as your content management system: magazine layouts, affiliate sites, sales pages, non-blog websites are only some of the possibilities
  • The most thorough SEO toolset of any theme framework, including compatibility with your existing All-in-One SEO Pack plugin data and built-in redirects

In addition to these improvements in Headway itself, the entire Headway site has been redesigned and refreshed:

  • Super-beasty new look and logo
  • Easier navigation
  • Easier user forums (which are highly active — the Headway community is a very helpful and friendly place, design snob-free)
  • A brand-new helpdesk system spanning all possible communications channels from forums to social media to email (yes, that’s right, real email support!).

What This Means for Remarkablogger

I mentioned above I’ve been rethinking a lot of things. What does that mean and how does it relate to Headway? For a while now, I’ve been dissatisfied with what I’ve been doing professionally and by extension on this site. And that very connection between one’s profession and one’s website is actually the key to what I’m doing next. The line between those two elements has become so blurred that I see a new space being created.

Remarkablogger is going to operate in that new space, that nexus of business and blog. In other words, it’s going to be about more than just blogging — but also about more than just online business.

This has been brewing in me for a while now, and during that time, writing along the old lines just held absolutely no appeal to me. None. Hence the lack of posts here. Yes I left money on the table by doing that, but I’m far from broke and this is more important to me personally than presenting affiliate opportunities which come my way. A lot of this in fact comes from the constant work I have been doing with my blog consulting clients.

So I have a new direction and that means new content and new services & products. And that means new website. That’s where the Headway connection comes in, because of course the new design will be on Headway 2.0. In fact, I’m going to record much of that process and create videos so you can see how fast and easy it is to use Headway and have an example of how to create a real business website with it.

This blog has been around since 2005 and there’s some busted old data that’s screwing some backend things up. As part of this move I’m going to export all the posts, create a brand-new blog installation on a new server, then import everything and switch the nameservers over to the new place.

I’m keeping the name Remarkablogger, because blogging is still the centerpiece of it all, and it’s still the “handle” by which people hold these online business ideas in their minds.

I’m pretty excited about all of this. Life is short and I have dreams I want to make reality. I have a lot to offer online sellers, freelancers, consultants and coaches.

Oh… and now that the cat is out of bag on this, you’ll see a hell of lot more blog posts from me as well. I have all this cool new stuff to tell you about. :)

JUST got my Headway site up at http://www.burkertvaluation.com. Have gotten many compliments … dual headers and dual sidebars were just what I wanted and needed.

Rod, it looks great! Did you use the Quick Start Wizard to automatically

create a matching color scheme with your banner image? That's easily one of

my favorite new features in Headway 2.0. :)

Now that I am off the floor after falling out of my chair, it is really nice to see you writing. One should have the right to evolve as circumstances, events and opportunities come along, people can choose on their own to follow along and embrace the change.

You may want to write about how you went about coming to this change — a lot, I am sure, is simply not having stuff feel right, but once you get to a level of discontent with the present, thought needs to go into “what's next?”. That level of discontent and the thought it takes to move to another level is compelling.

    Oh. And Headway. Word.

Scot, I hope you didn't hurt yourself. :)

I like your suggestion. It's tough to write publicly about what you're going

through when you're in the middle of it, because often it comes across as

narcissistic, self-involved wallowing. But after getting some distance and

perspective on it, sharing my experience could be valuable to others.
