The Tao of Blog Conferences

Watch the blog conference survival video on the blog if you don’t see it below.

My advice for surviving big blog conferences? Flow like water. Here’s some of the story of what happened at BlogWorld Expo ‘09 and how I managed it. People mentioned: Grant Griffiths, Naomi Dunford, Christine O’Kelly, and Joel Williams.

Crawling out of lurker state to say that I like how you "tag" your video with the names of the people you mention within. Smart stuff.
  • Michael, I did the same thing. Most of the morning keynotes (like many of the sessions), weren't so important that you'd be losing out if you missed them, so I ended up staying out late and sleeping in.

I spent more time in the hallway than I did in the conference rooms, and it turned out to be far more productive. I laughed when you talked about being more social than you normally are, because I forced myself to do the same thing.

On a side note, funny how people fly all the way to Vegas to watch presentations, but instead spend the whole time with their head buried in their laptop while Tweeting away.
  • Nathan, you raise a great point. One other thing that bugged me was that attendees had unprecedented access to the biggest names in the blogosphere, and yet only a tiny handful of people ever asked questions in any session.
  • No kidding! I was in the Wordcamp presentation with Darren, Chris G, and another guy (forgive me, I can't remember his name) and no one was asking questions, so I kept my hand up :)
  • That sounds a lot like how I'd tackle it. I'm usually a planner, but I think at a gathering like that, you'd limit yourself more by sitting there with a map, a highlighter, and a stopwatch.
  • Susan, glad you see it the same way. Besides, people laugh at you when you have stopwatch. :)
  • Great video (still planning on doing some videos myself one day...). I actually went with a plan all mapped out, though it got thrown to the wind so I should have done what you did. Thanks for the mention too, was great to meet you.
  • Joel, it was great to meet you as well! Make a list of talking points, and just start shooting video. Dive in, buddy!
  • That was smart to enjoy the event based on own your inner agenda while making some quality connections. Often Less is More.

Thanks for reminding us to check Naomi's site and mentioning the people you met. Great video!
  • Michael,
I clicked on your site to see how the Headway Theme looks and if I would be able to use the full width for my 'About' page. Not only did I see that you set up your 'About' like I want to but I see that you tagged Joel Williams. He is my go to blog tech guru. And, this isn't a solicited high-five...although, if he did have an affiliate prog. I'd be able to buy a new triathlon bike by now.

I'm glad you found your oasis amongst the throngs in LV
  • Ashley, that's great to hear! Joel is the man. :)
  • Interesting, congrats on the clients, I liked the some of the sessions the most, the floor part seemed like a lot of spam going on. I need to be more social, and speak up, I think tweet-up's help with that, we'll have to do one again before the next bwe.
  • Hmm...it was nice to know about the Blogowrld Expo '09 especially for novice bloggers like me, it surely is helpful.
