Overwhelmed by Blogging?
I’ve been getting a lot of questions from readers indicating there are quite a few of you who are just barely starting out in this blogging game. What I’m hearing from you is that you feel overwhelmed about where to even start. Another situation I hear about a lot is that you have created a blog and you’ve written some posts, but beyond that you’re not sure what to do.
Wisdom is Someone Else’s Hindsight
We all wish we knew then what we know now, and blogging is no exception. They say “hindsight is 20/20″ and there’s a lot of truth to that. Fortunately… nobody said it had to be your hindsight!
Smart people benefit from the experience of others.
I’ve already figured out all this blogging stuff, and I’m a professional trainer and teacher of computer software with over eight years of experience teaching others. I’m good at explaining things to beginners. You can find out for yourself how good by listening to the special gift I’m including in this post below. Keep reading and you’ll see what I mean.
What it’s Like to have Your Own Blog Coach
A few days ago I had the pleasure of coaching Abigail, who was such a tech novice that she didn’t even know how to make a hyperlink in a blog post! I don’t say that to pick on her or embarrass her, but to share with you that if you feel like a beginner lost in an ocean of experts, you are not alone! That’s exactly how Abby felt… but it’s a different story for her, now!
Abby was kind enough to let me share our conversation with you. I want to share it with you so that you can hear how a blog coach works, and how much help she got out of this. Listening to this call may help you. There may be valuable information in it for you (especially if you’re just getting started and you’re on Blogger). Her enthusiasm for what she learns is contagious: don’t be surprised to find yourself smiling and laughing with her.
Have a listen:
I want to give you the chance to have what Abby had for yourself. But instead of doing it one-on-one at $150 an hour, we’re going to do it as group coaching, or a teleclass, and it’s going to be a lot less than $150 per hour.
Here’s the plan:
This Friday, at 3pm Eastern time, I’m going to host a live webinar. This is essentially a live “tv show” on the web. It’s called Blogging for Smart Beginners. If you’re a beginner at blogging or want to get reacquainted with the basics, this is for you.
Here’s how it works:
Once you register, you’ll get a link to private web address for the webinar (not immediately, but the morning of). The webinar will be on a service called Ustream. You should create a free account with them, since that will make it easier for me to identify you in the chat room. I’ll speak on camera and you’ll be able to see me on a screen and hear me on your speakers. There will a chat room on the side where you can type in your questions and chat with others.
The chat room is where you can ask questions and interact with others. There’s nothing technologically intimidating about it, you just watch, listen, take notes if you want, and ask questions by typing them in the little chat box and hitting Enter. See? Easy.
Topics
- How to decide what to blog about. Picking your blog’s topics and purpose is the most important thing you can do. You can start a blog on a whim, or your can put some thought and planning into it. I’m more of a “thought and planning” kind of guy, because it gets better results. We’ll talk about how to choose a topic for your blog that will get visitors and make you happy.
- How to get a blog set up the best way. What kind of blogging software should you use? Do you have to buy a domain name and if so, how do you? What does it cost to set up a blog? What skills do you need? What are the first things you should do with your blog?
- How to get people to come to your blog, read it, and subscribe to it. Unless you really just like to hear yourself talk, you want people to read your blog. We’ll discuss exactly, step-by-step, how that can happen for your blog.
- Q&A session: nothing is off-limits, no question is “too basic.” This is what makes the “live” part so worth it all: you can ask questions and I’ll answer them!
The last time I did one of these, it was a big hit, with nearly 50 people in attendance! Lots of good things were said about it in the last few minutes of the chat room:

Questions about the Webinar?
I’m happy to answer them in the comments below!

Very good intro that I will point beginners to.
Mike,
I attended your No-Holds-Barred Blogging Webinar and came away with so much great information. I’m glad to see you’ll be sharing your know-how with the rest of the world!
Seriously, if anyone wants to know more about building a blog to success? You have GOT to attend. You won’t be disappointed!
Michael,
Words cannot describe how much I have learned from you… I’d need a whole blog just dedicated to that!
I might be going out on a limb here, but I believe that I have quietly been studying under your expert tutelage for longer than anyone else out there… so just for fun everybody, I would like to pose a question:
“How long have you been learning from Michael?”
All the best,
Jimmy
@Jimmy – Hey man, nice to hear from you! It’s always a great and pleasant surprise when you pop in from nowhere to say something. I’ve been at this game since the mid 90s and 2009 is going to be big. Thank you for the testimonial!
Sound like just what I need at the moment. One question. I’m not sure I’ll be available at the time of the webinar so I was wondering if this will be recorded so I can at least listen latter.
Thanks, Have A Great Christmas
JD
@JD – Yes, it will be recorded and only people with the password (in other words, those who registered) will be able to watch it later.
[...] In the holiday busyness, you may have missed my announcement of a live webinar this afternoon. It’s really going to be a good one: “Blogging for Smart Beginners.” Learn more and register for it here. http://remarkablogger.com/2008/12/22/blogging-for-smart-beginners-live-webinar/ [...]
Michael, I’ve been reading your blogs for over a year, and I like the idea of your smart beginner webinar. Only I got the e-mail announcement the day AFTER the thing. Going to do another one?
Thanks, Randall, sorry you missed it! Yes, I’ll repeat it again, maybe in a couple months. Have tons of new things planned for January!
Had my computer in repair but I am back in the game. Sorry I missed this.
Let me know when the next one is.

Great post on blogging. I even started my own blog on money making and these tips will be a big aid for me.
Sounds great for those that are just starting out blogging. I have been at for a few years now. As a Realtor it can have a serious impact on your business. People like reading quality content and blogs are a great way to provide it.
Holliston, thanks! I know a few other Realtors as well who have had good business even in down market thanks to their blogs.
