Blog Writing Series: Simple doesn’t mean Stupid, or, How to Write So Anyone Can Understand You

This is the fifth and final post in a series on blog writing. These posts are based on ideas from a great little book called The Elements of Business Writing, by Gary Blake & Robert Bly. I’ve taken some of these ideas about business writing and adapted them for blogging with my own spin.

Keep it Simple

Can’t see the video? Check it out on the blog

Keepin’ it simple breaks down into four simple (surprisingly enough) ideas:

  1. Use short words.
  2. Use short sentences.
  3. Use short paragraphs.
  4. Break you post into sections with sub-headings.

What’s brilliant is you can do this without dumbing down your content. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself.

Thanks for reading, listening to, and watching the Blog Writing series.

PS – I plan on creating videos that will only be seen by subscribers to Remarkanotes, my email newsletter that goes out once or twice a week. If you haven’t yet subscribed, fill out the form at the top of the page.

    Hi,

Thank you for this article series. I’ve learn some valuable things from all these posts.

Just like in real life where the simpler the solution the better. I guess that the same basic principle applies to blog writing too.

    Thank you

Some people just don’t realize the value in the K.I.S.S. ideology.

I always try to write in such a way that my 5-year-old cousin can understand me, but sometimes it helps if somebody would tell me whether I’m doing it correctly :D

    BTW, I don’t have a 5-year-old cousin.
