Loren Feldman Drops some Blogging Knowledge

If you can’t see the video, watch it on the blog.

If you don’t like to hear salty language, don’t watch this video, because Loren swears quite a bit.

Loren is one those “love him or hate him” guys. I love him. If you’ve never seen what he does or how he does it, you’re missing out. He’s definitely got a shtick. You don’t have to like him or be like him to learn from his example.

He drops a lot of good advice in this video. I’d love to hear your thoughts about what he’s saying. Is he on to something? Is he just kind of a jerk? Both?

Feldman is direct and engaging. But, I have to disagree with his idea of linking, which he discussed near the end of the clip. Most people are too busy to google a name in a post. They are MUCH more likely to find out about “Hugh,” for example, if there is a direct link.

Loren does Loren better than anyone. He’s a great example of “I’ll do me, and you do you.” Generally speaking, I find him abrasive and very difficult to take (most of the time I can’t get his message because his delivery drowns it out).

This clip shows something of him I don’t think I’ve ever seen, but suspected *had* to be there–a man with the ability to share cogent thoughts without overpowering everyone else around him with snarkiness.

And frankly, I was surprised to hear his message (the “it’s your blog, do what you wanna do” message). I’d have expected something more akin to his Web 2.0 Is Dead video.

So, good on Loren for this talk. And thank you for sharing it, Michael–I never would have seen it if you hadn’t (because I’ve stopped following/watching him).

As for Adrianos’ comment about the no linking thing…I’m the girl who absolutely would go Google something there was no link for, but I’m curious, and don’t mind taking extra steps to look at stuff I find online.

In truth, I prefer when people are kind and provide links to things they write about–to me, it’s a courtesy (beyond the link love piece of the puzzle), and I appreciate it. I’m betting most other people do, too.

FWIW, what I learn about someone/something I’ve read about in a blog ends up being dependent on who/what that person/thing is and how my attention is grabbed, NOT by how I got there. Loren’s method wouldn’t teach me a thing–although it’s nice to know the method behind his madness isn’t simply being a jerk…which is what I would have assumed (had I been assuming ).

I liked it; the language and such doesn’t bother me.

I think he’s more neurotic than he lets on, though. Smart guy. He’s chosen his role in life. Had some wise things to say.

@Adrianos – There’s something to be said for such a tactic because of the strategy it supports. The problem with it is that it’s something you need to do from the beginning, I feel, otherwise you’re really going to throw your audience for a loop. Having said that, I personally believe that linking out is a superior strategy in the long run. It can’t be the web if there are no connections!

@Stacy – “Loren does Loren better than anyone” is a GREAT way to put it. It also shows one of the reasons for his success (and it’s the reason he himself gives in the video and what we always say will lead to success).

@Mark – He might just be a lot more neurotic than he lets on. A bunch of people unfollowed me on Twitter after I posted a link to the video, so I guess either he or his language must be bothering somebody! :)

    hi,

There are things that I agree with and some that I don’t.

If you’re running a personal blog just for fun then it’s more then ok to stick to your vision and write what you want there.

But if you intend to monetize it or it’s a business blog then you have to do the opposite. There are many shops where the owner doesn’t like the merchandise he sells but he must make money out of it.

So, in conclusion, if you want to have the chance to make money then you have to be careful what you write, you have to market yourself on twitter (he is write : do not say follow me no matter what) and you must try to have traffic and comments on your blog.

Don’t lower yourself for money but in my opinion it’s nothing wrong to be commercial.

    Thank you
