My friend and rockstar freelancer Christine O’Kelly is one of the brightest and most passionate people I know. Her blog, Self-Made Chick is on my must read, must comment list. We’ve each helped the other with ideas that solve problems and find a way to success.
Well, now she’s done and gone put out her ebook, too! And I tell you what: you want this book. It’s How I Built A Profitable Freelance Business for Under $50 (And How You Can Too!). It answers all the questions you have when you’re trying to figure out how to get your freelance business off the ground:
- How do I figure out what my services are?
- What do I charge?
- How do I track billable time and invoice?
- How do get a web presence on the cheap?
This is all stuff that Christine knows about first hand: she has lived this. Been there. Done that. She’s telling you her own story, really. It’s as authentic as it gets. But, then, she always does this. She writes on her blog like this, too. It’s so refreshing. She knows the pitfalls, and she tells you about ‘em in little “Procrastination Buster” segments. She speaks from her own experience, and provides awesome tips in “Advice From the Trenches” segments.
I’m also thrilled that she mentions me in the context of blogging for your freelance business and as a demonstration of the power of coining your own term as a marketing and branding strategy. I’m flattered, humbled, and grateful.
Is it really that good? I learned something from this book that is so important, it means I’ll soon be offering new blog consulting services in addition to my current packages (Thank you, Christine!).
Now, unlike my ebook, Christine’s is not free. It costs only $12. Less than a 12-pack of good beer. The advice that’s in here is so valuable, she could have sold it for $60, or even more, and it would still be worth it. The advice that I’ve gotten from Christine has made me thousands of dollars in just a few short months. I think you can spare the coin for this.
But get this: the cost of the book is figured into the cost of starting your freelance business for less than $50! So, if you figure you can start your business for $50, the cost of the book is already covered.

I’m already a freelancer in the ‘real world’ and working towards building something in the online world…but it’s a very narrow niche. Thanks for posting her link! Another great find.

@Christine – You’re welcome. I agree that the time for freelancing is right. In Tom Peters’ book, Re-Imagine, Tom foresees that a great many white-collar workers will be replaced by smart computer/software systems and outsourcing much in the same way that blue-collar workers were replaced by manufacturing robots/outsourcing in the seventies and eighties. “Expert systems” are already being used. Soon, general artificial intelligence will be a reality.
So, what’s gonna keep that income comin’ in? Creativity, wisdom, and mutually beneficial human relationships. The same three things that are a strong force in freelancing, especially when aided by technology.
