Overheard in the Blogosphere 11

Yes, it’s been a while since the last Overheard in the Blogosphere. You know why? Because it’s about quality, not quantity. Please enjoy responsibly. Whatever that means (as an aside, what a coup of marketing propaganda that slogan is!)

Facebook is pushing themselves into a position of being viewed as ungrateful data hogs: amassing tons of information, selling it under false pretense, and not sharing it with the folks who gave it to them. (Jason Calacanis)

My Dad bought me my own C64 when I was 3. I actually won second place in the National Science Fair with an artificial intelligence program I wrote. I was 12. That was before the sex change. (Naomi Dunford)

A lot of people are shy about entering large markets and stick with niche blogs. I would much prefer to own 1% of a huge market because you can own 50% of it on a day when you release some unique news. (Patrick Altoft)

Most bloggers never even try to set themselves up as authorities and instead opt for repeating and reporting. If you are simply repeating what top bloggers in your industry are writing, you are adding to their authority and taking away from your own. (Courtney Tuttle)

Julie is the most determined finisher on the face of the planet. It is so strong that she is very cautious starting anything because she knows she will be driven to finish it. So telling Julie I am going to quit anything is like trying to tell the Pope that you have been thinking about it and your are going to have a little gay sex, but that it is ok and you are still a good Christian. (Shane Pearlman)

Grow up and stop acting like a bunch of petulant spoiled children, who now have to share their favorite toy with the rest of the kids in the playground. Here’s a newsflash real businesses adapt to changes in the world around them, they don’t dictate that the rest of world capitulate to their whims just because they say they are warm, fuzzy, and “do no evil”. Michael, can I make a suggestion? I love these quotes and I struggle to figure out which quote is attributed to the one above or below the linked names.

Could you tuck the name and link into the same paragraph?

It would make the attribution unmistakable.

    Thanks!

Great idea, Greg. Consider it done! :)

Hi Michael – Thanks for the props. I am all new to your blog and will go forth and explore!

Hey any chance you want to join the lot of us and answer the interview? I would absolutly love to hear a bit more about you.

    Michael:

I love your “Heard in the Blogosphere” feature. It’s very interesting because many of these feature blogs I never read or heard of (with some exceptions).

In today’s feature I particularly enjoyed the article about Facebook being a data hog. It makes me glad I never bothered to sign up with them or any of the other social media sites (except for StumbleUpon).

@Stephen: Thank you! Yes, it seems everyone digs it (by the way people, you can also “digg” it , too, if you know what I mean, wink wink nudge nudge say no more what). I get a little thrill every time I run across something and I realize it would make a perfect little quote for the next one.

As far as social networks go, I have found Facebook to be mostly annoying. I reject nearly every stupid little whatever that’s sent to me. Really I should probably just cancel… if I even can (hmmm… I wonder about that).

But I’ve found LinkedIn to be highly useful. I actually get hired through it, so that automatically makes it a million times more valuable to me than the others. If anyone’s curious, see my About page for all my social networking profile links. I actually do not automatically approve everyone to be my friend, but if you want to add me to your friends list, and you’ve commented on my blog, that’s good enough (I said I had standards–I didn’t say they were high :) ).

    Michael:

You have a very interesting voice that I can pick up even with words. You have a sense of, how should I put it, well, humor. That’s pretty much obvious but man, I feeling your sense of “realness.” You’re real and I’m picking up on that energy. You are one cool dude. I don’t know how to say it other than what I just said.

I really enjoy your blog. I’ve been trimming my RSS feed because I’m finding a lot of the blogs out there to be just repeats and not much in depth. Many of them don’t elicit a strong reaction in me but yours does. It’s pretty cool.

I am also in LINKEDIN and I also don’t automatically add friends either. You were funny when you said, “I sad I had standards – I didn’t say they were high.” Now, THAT was funny. :)

So just keep it up. And maybe I’ll find you in LINKEDIN. To be truthful, I haven’t found it to be much of anything. Many of the people I want to get a hold of are several degrees away and even when trying to reach someone through someone else, it rarely works. What about you?

Sorry for the LONG comment. I can get carried away sometimes.

@Stephen: Thanks, your comment about voice means a lot to me, because anyone who writes and does marketing as part of their livelihood knows how important that is. Tell you what, I’ll take the step and invite you to my LinkedIn network. I love long comments–they mean people are thinking and that they find the high level of participation worth it.

@Paul: Yes, he’s great for stuff like that, isn’t he? Very entertaining and he makes his point very well.
