Blog Catalog Redesigns but Loses Data

blogcataloglogo.gifBlog Catalog, a popular social blogging community similar to MyBlogLog, has redesigned. Here’s what they say the improvements include:

  • Complete Visual Redesign
We have finally shed our dated look for a much cleaner interface.
  • Shout-to-Shout
get a better picture of your shoutbox conversations with our new shout-to-shout feature.
  • BlogCatalog Broadcasts
Send mass messages to your BlogCatalog followers with our new Broadcast tool.
    http://www.blogcatalog.com/broadcast
  • Special Features For Our Supporters
Get frequent thumbshot updates, no ads, access to beta features and much more when you help support BlogCatalog
    http://www.blogcatalog.com/account.donate.php
  • Improved Language Support
With blogs in dozens of languages we’ve updated our encoding to a much more friendly UTF8.
  • and many more features…

However, it looks like the redesign wasn’t without a price:

Unfortunately we recenly suffered some data loss on our server. We had to roll back most of the data to our June 25th backup. We were able to rescue the blog data and user information as well as some discussions up to July 6th 4PM CST.

If you created your account or submitted a blog after July 6th, you may need to repeat the process.

We are really sorry for the inconvenience and hassles this has caused you. We are working on a new server and should have it running by week end. This should prevent similar problems from occurring in the future.

In the mean time, we hope this hasn’t cause you too many problems. Please post any issues you are having on here or email them to webmaster@blogcatalog.com.

One of the things that’s great about Blog Catalog is they have a blog rating widget you can put on your blog. Mine’s over to the right in the sidebar, under my Technorati info. Please rate my blog, thanks!

I really wish that BlogCatalog was based on a PHP plugin as I try to limit the amount of Javascript I use on my blog. But that is just me.

Yes, it puts us in a difficult position of weighing benefits of such a feature vs. download time costs.

I prefer MyBlogLog over all the social networks. My guess is that most people will try many, but only regularly use one.

I would have to say I get more benefits from MyBlogLog as well. I think you’re right about trying many and keeping one.

Their redesign included features that Mybloglog already had.

Yes, Rose, they are playing catch-up in that sense. I think MyBlogLog has a stronger, more singular purpose, although I’ve heard people say the discussions at Blog Catalog are great.
