Alex, this particular blog does not have many AdSense placements, because my goal with it right now is to make it into the best resource I can for better blogging. Right now, I’m in a phase where I want to build up readership and establish trust and relationships with readers.

If you take a look at a couple of my other blogs, you will see how I’m using AdSense. For example, at GoogleTube Video of the Day, I use a horizontal link unit at the top and an image/video ad above the main post area. Since this is a video blog, the ads are nearly always videos, so they blend in nicely with the overall blog. They have decent clickthrough rates. Video ads are an improvement over text-only ads, which is not the norm, but the context matters.

On the other hand, if you take a look at Dark Sided, you will see text ads, and that I have matched the fonts between the blog and the ads.

I’ll post more on this topic in the future, but I hope this gives you a good answer to your question for now.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Please let your friends know about this blog, as well!

Alex, while integrating ads into the appearance and flow of your blog is an ideal way to go, I think in your case the ads aren’t noticeable enough, and they are overlooked. You can place ads in places on the page where people will be sure to see them, such as above posts, below posts, or within posts. See my previous post: What Everybody Needs to Read about Google AdSense Optimization.

    Hi Michael,

Just found your blog via Alex Goad’s. I liked your wordpress themes idea for getting links. I may try that in the future. Any particular design software you recommend for creating themes? Speaking of themes, I’m using Cutline. Thinking to move to Semiprologic or Copyblogger. Which one does your blog use?

Hi Rian, thanks for commenting. My design software is Photoshop for graphics, Notepad++ for code editing, and Filezilla for file transfer. My current theme is a customization I made of Sandbox. There are still a couple small kinks to work out that are only noticable on a monitor resolution of 1024 x 768 or less, but other than that I’m fairly happy with my efforts. Nobody else’s themes ever really do it for me… I always have to make my own. The beauty of Sandbox is that it was made for that.
